Who knows when God first planned to plant VCKC, but He began preparing the ground by bringing several core group members to Mount Vernon around the year 2000 and giving them a vision for a Vineyard church. God brought people to Mt. Vernon from as far as Alaska and Seattle to join others already in town who were being drawn to help start the church. He orchestrated our gathering and direction over the first half of 2002.
A small group of people from various churches in Mount Vernon began gathering in September 2002 for the purpose of worship, prayer, and seeking God’s will in this church plant. Soon they connected to Vineyard Church Delaware County to be guided by senior pastor Danny Meyer and to be supported by that body of believers. Also, Chris Macky, our founding pastor, had the opportunity to be tutored by Rich Nathan, senior pastor of Vineyard Columbus.
By January of 2003 the group grew and expanded into three “home groups,” and we began conducting public Sunday Night Celebrations once each month in order to draw more people to the movement. By engaging in fellowship and outreach activities during the summer months of 2003, the core group grew and matured to a place where we could birth weekly Sunday morning Celebrations. Our first public Sunday Celebration Service was held on September 21, 2003, in the Mount Vernon Middle School Commons Area. Over 60 people attended.
By the Spring of 2004, we had welcomed 32 people into membership, baptized 10 kids and adults, and moved our Sunday Celebration Services from Mount Vernon Middle School to the High School Theater. In response to continued growth and a desire to have our own “home base” from which to serve the community, in November of 2005 we purchased the old Rockwell Furniture store at 806 Harcourt Road in Mount Vernon and began renovating the facility to serve as our new church home. The renovation became a reality in January of 2007, and since that time we have continued to grow, averaging between 150-200 adults at Sunday Celebration services, possessing a vibrant children’s and youth ministry, and birthing several new home groups for a total of ten (eight adult and two youth). As we have grown, we have continued to serve, organizing such local outreach projects as the Backpack Giveaway, the Free Garage Sale, and the Turkey Giveaway, and sending mission teams to such places as Honduras, Brazil, and India. God has been good!
In the Fall of 2007, Chris Macky stepped down from his role of Senior Pastor, feeling God’s call to leave full-time ministry in a church and re-enter it teaching Bible at a Christian high school. Yet the church continues to embrace the values that we have from the beginning - things like the importance of healthy relationships and service to one another, a de-emphasis of religious form, ministry by the whole church and not just by paid professionals, an open, informal style, and a strong desire for spiritual reality. We hope you’ll come and be a part of our family!
