At the Vineyard, ministry is simply expressing God’s love by serving others, so when we talk of ministry, we believe it is something each one of us can and should do. If you are a Christian, then you have a ministry. The key is (of course), finding it.
David wrote a Psalm celebrating the fact that we are all uniquely created by God. Psalm 139:13-15 reads, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.”
This is exactly what you are to God - delicately made, precisely crafted, precious, “knitted together”. He shaped your personality and your natural abilities and your intelligence very carefully in the womb. Not only is every person a delicately made work of God, but when we trust God with our lives, when we become Christians, the Bible says, God begins a re-creation project. We become new creations in Christ Jesus. Why do you think he made such great effort to shape you the way you are? Why do you think he paid such a high price to save you, to re-create you?
He shaped you and continues to shape you for a particular ministry; He made you to contribute to enjoy life and to express His love. You are fearfully and wonderfully made for a purpose. Ephesians 2:8-10 explains, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Eugene Peterson’s translation makes the point, “No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.”
God knit us together in our mother’s womb and he saved us in Christ Jesus, restoring us, for the purpose of putting us to a particular work.
