Breakthrough of the Miraculous

Sermon Audio from Sunday, March 12, 2006 — Do you believe in miracles? This is relevant both in culture at large as well as within the church. I did a Google search on "Do you believe in miracles?" The 1980 men's hockey olympic team was at the top of the results list (about seven screens worth). Two teams stepped on the ice that day, one was going to win, and the other was going to lose, so there was a 50% chance that the U.S. team was going to win from a straight statistical point of view. That's like me flipping a quarter and every time it landed on heads shouting "Do you believe in miracles? It's heads!"

We have come to a time in our culture where the West has really abandoned the thought of a sovereign God interacting in his creation -- of the creator actually having an impact on His creation. We've forfeited that to the power of our minds and science, and what we're left with is a post-modern era where people aren't opposed to experience, but if you attach the phrase God or Jesus to it, no way is that relevant for most people. Those are ancient thoughts, not forces that can interact with us today.
