Calling All Doubters, Weaklings, and Failures

Sermon Audio from Sunday, April 18, 2004 — I remember wanting to be on the varsity basketball team so badly at my high school. It was my freshman year and our varsity team was as good as any team that had ever played at Wilmington Area High School. This team had won the league and the district, a feat that had been done only once in school history, and made it all the way to the State Semi-final game, further than any other team in school history. Oh, I wanted to be in uniform so badly! I wanted to be on an historic adventure! But, I was too young, so my place was up in the stands with 100s of others from my high school and community who had crammed into school buses and rode several hours just be in the gym while our team made history.

Just talking about that season gives me chills. We all have an inborn desire to be a part of something historic and that's no mistake. God made you that way. He made you to count. God is making history; He has an historic mission that is changing the world today and for eternity, and He invites you to join. You don't have to sit up in the stands or watch from the sidelines; you can get into uniform and get on the court. In fact, if you are a Christian, you are called to participate in God's mission. God does not call Christians to remain on the sidelines. Sometimes we need a time out to catch our breath or we need to make a trip to the hospital because we've need healing, but we are all ultimately called to get in the game. This "game," this historic mission we call the Great Commission, and it's found in Matthew 28:18-20.
