Jesus and Mary Magdalene

Sermon Audio from Sunday, May 28, 2006 — It's fairly safe to make the statement, "Everybody loves a wedding." Perhaps if you're in the throes of planning one, and overwhelmed by the stresses the event can bring, that statement doesn't apply to you. But more often than not, though we may even be stressed out, we still love it. For many, it's the spectacle of the whole thing. A great example of this is a royal wedding. It's estimated that 750 million people watched Charles & Diana wed in 1981 - that's not counting the 600,000 who turned out in the streets to cheer on the couple. Like a moth to a light, we can't help but watch and enjoy on some level.

We are in week two of this series, using the claims made in The Da Vinci Code as a launching point to investigate our Christian faith. The point of this series isn't to say "yea" or "nay" to the book or the movie. The point is to use the book's claims about Christianity that it purports are true - claims that if they were true, would challenge the way we understand the person of Jesus and therefore the most basic expressions of our faith - to investigate why we believe what we believe. This week we examine the claims that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene. We'll look at what the evidence is, and ask the question, why does it matter?
