Sermon Audio from Sunday, June 15, 2003 — Worship. Is there anything more central to the Christian faith? "The greatest truth of God is that He is worthy of our worship, and the deepest truth about ourselves is that we have been created to worship Him," wrote Don Williams (Worship Together). Over three thousand years ago, when the history of God's people was being written and they were being held captive in Egypt, God freed the Israelites from Pharaoh and created a worshiping nation. "Let my people go," God said, "so that they may worship me."
Worship. Is there anything more controversial in the church today? Ask any pastor of any established church what one of the major issues is that could divide his church today, and worship will be near, if not at, the very top of the list. Churches today are facing very difficult times as they decide what worship is and how they are going to experience it in their services. With the rise of contemporary worship music and it's increasing availability, churches that have worshiped one way for decades are asking questions like, How shall we worship? What music should we use? Should we sit, stand, kneel, raise our hands, run around? What instruments are important? And the search for answers to these questions has split hundreds of churches and caused great pain in hundreds of others.
